The flexible traveller’s guide
How to find flight deals with flexible dates
A little flexibility is useful. A clear plan for comparing it is even better.
Decide what can actually move
Start with your real constraints: days off, school dates, accommodation plans and the latest acceptable arrival. Keep non-negotiable dates fixed. Then identify which departure days or lengths of stay you can reasonably change.
Compare like with like
Compare the same passenger count, baggage assumptions and route type. Look at the complete round trip rather than a low outbound price on its own. An extra night away can also add accommodation, meals and transport costs.
Widen one thing at a time
Try changing a departure date, then the trip length, then the destination. Keeping the other details stable makes the tradeoff easier to understand. Save the options you would genuinely book and compare their schedules together.
Make the airport decision deliberately
A nearby airport may expand your options, but include travel time, transfer costs and separate-ticket risks. Avoid treating a long ground journey or a self-transfer as free. Choose the option that fits the whole trip, rather than the smallest headline number.
Recheck when you are ready
Observed fares can change. Before paying, confirm that the price, dates, airports, names and ticket conditions match your plan. A good comparison helps you decide; it does not predict the next price change.
